Discover Salt & Lime Modern Taqueria

Walking into Salt & Lime Modern Taqueria for the first time feels like discovering a local secret that everyone somehow already knows. Tucked into 350 E 17th St #2, Costa Mesa, CA 92627, United States, the place has that relaxed neighborhood energy where flip-flops and business casual mix without anyone blinking. I stopped by on a weekday afternoon after hearing friends rave about the tacos, and the line at the counter told me those reviews weren’t exaggerated.

The menu leans modern without losing touch with tradition. You’ll see classics like carne asada and carnitas, but they’re handled with a lighter touch and better balance than what you usually find at a corner taqueria. One of the staff explained how proteins are prepped daily, marinated overnight, and cooked in small batches to keep texture consistent. That attention to process shows up immediately in the first bite. The al pastor I ordered had crisp edges, juicy centers, and just enough pineapple to keep things bright rather than sweet. It’s the kind of taco that makes you pause mid-conversation and think this is what people mean when they say fresh.

From a professional food perspective, this approach lines up with what culinary researchers often highlight. The James Beard Foundation regularly points out that ingredient sourcing and minimal processing are key drivers of flavor and customer satisfaction. According to their published insights on contemporary Mexican-American kitchens, small-batch preparation improves consistency while reducing waste. You can see that theory play out here, especially during busy lunch hours when quality doesn’t dip even as orders stack up.

Drinks deserve their own moment. The margaritas are built around real citrus, not mixes, and you can taste the difference immediately. I asked about it, and the bartender mentioned they juice limes in-house throughout the day. That extra step may sound simple, but food science studies from institutions like UC Davis show that fresh citrus juice loses aromatic compounds within hours. Keeping it fresh means brighter flavor and less need for added sugar, which explains why these drinks feel clean instead of heavy.

What really stands out, though, is how the space encourages lingering. The open layout, natural light, and casual seating make it easy to turn a quick lunch into a long catch-up session. I’ve since returned with coworkers and family, and the experience holds up across different crowds. Parents appreciate the straightforward ordering, while food-focused friends dive deep into salsa options and taco combinations. That versatility is probably why local reviews stay consistently strong, with many regulars pointing out reliability as much as flavor.

There are a few limitations worth noting. Parking around 17th Street can be tight during peak hours, and the menu, while focused and thoughtful, doesn’t aim to be encyclopedic. If you’re looking for an ultra-traditional regional Mexican spread, this might feel streamlined. On the flip side, that focus is exactly what keeps execution tight and wait times reasonable.

In a dining scene crowded with taco spots, Salt & Lime Modern Taqueria manages to stand out by doing fundamentals exceptionally well. It’s not trying to reinvent tacos or overwhelm you with choices. Instead, it delivers food that’s carefully prepared, consistently satisfying, and easy to come back to, which is ultimately what keeps a local restaurant thriving.

  • Some of the most delicious tacos I’ve had!! The sauces were amazing and unique and everything tasted very fresh. Meats were perfectly well done. Chef came out and recommended dairy free alternatives for their most popular tacos. I recommend the flight so you can try 4-5 tacos. Highly recommend!!

  • I’ve been eager to try this place, and their Taco Tuesday deal (buy 3, get 1 free) was the perfect opportunity. As shrimp lovers, we ordered two grilled charcoal shrimp tacos, one rib eye taco, and one crispy fried halibut taco—and they were absolutely incredible. The shrimp had that perfect smoky char, the halibut was golden and flaky (one of the best I’ve ever had!), and the rib eye was so tender, complemented perfectly by their house sauce. Every bite was a delight. Beyond the food, the modern vibe makes it a great spot for a fun friends’ night out. I’ll definitely be back—both for the amazing tacos and the lively atmosphere!

  • This is our third time here and Salt and Lime has quickly become our favorite spot in all of Orange County for tacos. The quality is exceptional, Chef Zack brings so many wonderful flavors that you can’t find anywhere else. I just tried his wagyu ribeye burrito for the first time, and the charred shishito peppers were a fantastic addition. It’s an absolute must-try when you’re coming here for the first time. Parking is easy, seating is plentiful inside and outside, and the service is great. The tacos come on fresh handmade blue corn tortillas which are so delicious! There are a bunch of different tacos and we have tried almost the whole menu and loved all of them!

  • Excellent fast casual Mexican taqueria with beer wine and margaritas. We sat outside on a Saturday night. I had the sweet and spicy chicken burrito and my wife had their shrimp burrito. We also had their Brussels sprouts as an appetizer. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. The Brussels sprouts were nicely cooked and had pomegranate seeds on top which was a nice touch but they were a little too oily and way too much honey on them. It has a lot of potential. The burritos were good side and nicely prepared. I liked the shrimp burrito more than the sweet and spicy chicken. Didn’t taste the kimchi inside at all. It needed a kick that it failed to deliver. It fell flat. I will be back to try a few other items to see what the rest of the menu taste like. I feel like this place can have a lot of potential.

  • This place was impressive and definitely lives up to the hype from its previous reviews. Tacos are generously sized, ingredients sourced and fresh, and lemonade made in-house. I would definitely come back! Gentlemen at the counter was also very polite and it was a relaxed

  • Salt & Lime provides a delicious variety of tacos; but you really need to taste, try, and sample to figure out which ones fit your pallet. I loved the curry dusted chicken taco and thought the salmon taco was quite good. Note: As of July 2024, they have removed the most delicious crusted chicken tacos from the menu; I hope people petition S&L to bring them back! Normally, I really dig vegan tacos, but their sweet potato taco was too sweet for me and their mushroom taco seemed too marinated for my liking. I look forward to returning and trying more tacos. Note: On taco Tuesdays they have a buy three get the fourth free special + I did return and tried more tacos: Tempura fried halibut taco is delicious, as long as you like fried Shrimp taco with guacamole and pineapple was delicious; will get it again Eggplant taco was very good; a little bit too much cream sauce for my taste; nonetheless a delicious blend of flavors Citrus chicken taco was good, and I might order it again, but it was not nearly as phenomenal as the curry dusted chicken taco

  • After finishing up a hike, we were looking for a good local taco spot nearby and thought “this is the place!” Everything was phenomenal with some unique and elevated flavor combinations, fresh and house made ingredients and all so nicely presented. Hailey took amazing care of us and was sweet, prompt and polite. We tried: Toasted Coconut Marg - Small Batch Guac - Kids Chicken Tacos - Poke Nachos - Citrus Marinated Chicken Taco - Apple Braised Pork Belly - Churro Sundae We are visiting from Minnesota and might be back for supper! I will be trying my best to recreate that margarita when we get home! Thank you for a wonderful experience!
